As craft beer and social media become more and more entwined users of niche review app Untappd have grown beyond early adopters and craft beer followers.
Simon Underhill (26) a bachelor of arts graduate from Brisbane has recently cut a swathe through his local breweries with a no holes barred approach to reviewing their beers.
Mr Underhill will vehemently argue his opinion on anything with anybody. After struggling to find a group of friends who will listen he finally feels he has the platform he deserves.
“I used to drink Milton Mango’s and after I had a Yak Ale two weeks ago, it feels good to pass on my advice to the local craft brewers. Take Crazy Horse brewery for example in the Valley. They brew this great stout that I really loved, it just seemed too dark for me. This was an obvious 1 x-star review.”
Local Brewer Grant Elders (35) who recently took out a second mortgage on his house and works 75 hour weeks to keep his brewery doors open recently opened his notebook on yet another 7am start.
“We worked for weeks perfecting our stout recipe, keeping it really true to style. Untappd is really important to us as people who have never had our beers will check our average review without actually reading them”
Underhill who still lives with his parents and works part time doing night fill believes that he is not too far away from his first retweet.
“If things go as well as I think they will, I’ll probably start a craft beer blog.”
Elders meanwhile for the first time has not shown up to work in two years and his team of passionate staff are beginning to worry.
More to come.
